The Fremantle International Portrait Prize (FIPP) was founded in 2010, based on an idea by Fremantle professional photographer, Dale Neill.

FIPP runs biennially and is operated by a volunteer committee. The first competition was held in 2012. The founders aspired to formulate and conduct an ethical international competition to attract a wide variety of photographic portraiture. It is open to all people worldwide and is assessed by the highest quality of independent judges.

To date FIPP has donated AU$55,000 to the Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA medical charity and has simultaneously awarded AU$40,000 in cash and prizes. In that time FIPP has received nearly 6,000 entries from more than 50 countries, run four major exhibitions and developed a reputation as one of the leading photographic competitions in Australia.

In addition to continuing its support for the Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA charity, FIPP 2019 has taken on a second charity, namely, the Kai Eardley Foundation. This latter charity is concerned with offering research and valuable support for a variety of mental health problems associated with younger people. FIPP is run entirely by volunteers. A committee of eight, chaired by Professor Lawrie Beilin AO, together with more than 50 volunteers, combine to give thousands of hours to ensure that the above named Western Australian charities benefit financially.

In addition to the main category for images taken by film or digital cameras, FIPP 2019 affords photographic enthusiasts the opportunity also of entering the Mobile Phone category of the Award.

FIPP believes that photography is an international language and the biennial competition acts as an artistic magnet attracting photographic ideas, excellence and innovation from around the world. Every time someone enters FIPP they are also playing a small part in contributing to two worthwhile charities

• Camera – images captured on any digital or film camera
• Mobile Phone – images taken on a mobile phone
